In our Statement of Strategy 2012 -2015 adopted in January 2012, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has set out a significant road map for the organisation. The strategy sets out clear priorities which will extend our outputs, enhance consumer protection in relation to food and further support securing Ireland’s reputation as achieving the highest standards in food safety.

The four year strategy reflects a consultative process with our stakeholders and charts an ambitious work programme to achieve each objective and its associated and anticipated outcomes. At its core, our strategy’s primary goal is to protect people’s health in relation to food. At the same time, it recognises the importance of the agri-food and hospitality sectors to the Irish economy. We recognise the significance to Ireland as a major exporter and tourist destination and the imperative that we provide reliable, science-based and independent regulation of the food sector.

Our priorities and deliverables are enforcing food law; using best scientific advice to underpin all food safety decisions; working in partnership with all stakeholders to maintain and improve food standards and ensuring that the FSAI is responsive, proportionate and adaptable as well as efficient and effective. Each strategic priority outlined will in turn, underpin our work planning and regular review to ensure the organisation is on target to provide a service relevant to the needs of consumers, the food sector, Government, and our official partner agencies whilst meeting EU obligations.

Over the lifetime of this strategy, the FSAI will work to ensure Irish consumers and the consumers of Irish food at home and abroad are fully protected and that confidence is maintained in the safety of Irish produced foods. This strategy will focus the FSAI on continuing to maintain and develop a regulatory system that is trusted by consumers, has the confidence of the food sector and is acknowledged both at home and abroad as balanced in its actions which rely on best science and robust risk assessment.

During the period of this strategy, our remit is to be extended to include responsibility for the enforcement of animal feed legislation. We welcome this opportunity to work in this sector which impacts appreciably on food safety and look forward to enacting and fulfilling this strategy plan.
