Infant Formulae Notification

‘Infant formulae’ is defined in Commission Directive 2006/141/EC on infant formulae and follow-on formulae as meaning ‘foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional use by infants during the first months of life and satisfying by themselves the nutritional requirements of such infants until the introduction of appropriate complementary feeding’.

Notification (including a model of the label) of the first placing on the Irish market of infant formulae is a statutory requirement under S.I. No. 852 of 2007 which transposes Commission Directive 2006/141/EC on infant formulae and follow-on formulae.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland is the competent authority in Ireland for infant formulae notifications. Changes such as reformulations or the addition of new ingredients to a product already on the market will require notification. The obligation to notify falls on the manufacturer if the product is manufactured in Ireland and on the importer if the product is imported into Ireland. A separate form is required for each product.
