Monitoring
The FSAI continually monitors food on the Irish market for the protection of public health. Under the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act, 1998 , inspections of food business premises and the sampling and analysis of food and food labelling are carried out to determine compliance with food legislation.
In addition, Regulation 882/2004/EC requires that official controls are in place to enforce food law and to verify that the relevant requirements are fulfilled by food business operators at all stages of production, processing and distribution. Monitoring is carried out in conjunction with the official agencies - the Health Service Executive, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority and City and County Councils - and their associated laboratories.

Enforcement
Where food law is not complied with, the FSAI and its official agencies can take enforcement action using various powers set out in the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act 1998. These powers help them react to and deal with situations posing a risk to public health and are known as enforcement orders.
