New Training Course for African Food Shops
Thursday, 17 September 2009
To cater for the increase in growth and demand for African foodstuffs, the FSAI is hosting a specialist food safety training courses for African food shops at the end of September. The training course is specifically tailored to address the needs of this particular food sector working in Ireland.
The one day training sessions are available over a choice of two days, namely Wednesday 30th September and Thursday 1st October 2009 and are being held at the FSAI offices in Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1. The programme aims to provide staff working in African food shops with the necessary food safety knowledge to enhance food safety practices and also to comply with Irish food law.
According to Professor Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI, this new course has been developed in response to a growth in the provision of African foods in Ireland and it fills a vital gap in the provision of food safety training in Ireland.
“African food outlets should make it a priority to undertake this programme so that they can ensure that consumers can be confident of the highest standards of food safety when they purchase goods from their establishments. It has been designed to assist and encourage African food businesses to implement best food safety practices in their own business and is tailored to work across the specific food traditions and practices applicable to African food. It is our hope that those who complete the programme will then train their own staff in turn,” he says.
The training programme was developed in conjunction with environmental health officers from the Health Service Executive (HSE) and covers a depth of topics to protect public health in relation to food including; personal hygiene; food safety hazards; food storage; cleaning and pest control and managing food safety in the food business.
It costs €25 per person to attend the course and those wishing to book can contact the FSAI on 1890 336677.
