A Note on Status
The information displayed on this web site is based on data received from the Marine Institute and represents the results from shellfish samples received from production areas around the country. The data is updated regularly and every attempt is made to include the most up to date sample results. However, it should be pointed out that, in certain cases, the status displayed for any particular site may not accurately reflect its actual status at the time of viewing. The two main instances where this can occur are:
When the most recent sample result for a site is out of date - The status shown reflects the last sample result received from any particular site. If, however, a sample has not been received within a certain number of days, the site should be considered to be set to Closed Pending. For example during months of high risk of toxicity from June to September this interval equates to a week. Therefore, if the site's current status is Open, but if its last sample date was two weeks ago, then the site should be considered closed pending.
When a newer sample result has been received for a site in the same production area harvesting the same species - Sites belong to Production Areas. These Production Areas can encompass a number of sites harvesting the same or different species. In the instance that two or more sites in a Production Area harvest the same species, then the correct status for these sites is that of the site which has the most recent sample date. An example below illustrates this in the case of Banc Fluich, and Cromane East, which both harvest Mussels in Castlemaine Harbour.
| Site |
Production Area |
Sample Date |
Status |
| Cromane East |
Castlemaine Harbour |
05/04/2002 |
Closed |
| Banc Fluich |
Castlemaine Harbour |
01/04/2002 |
Open |
In this instance, because Cromane East has the most recent sample date, the production area, Castlemaine Harbour, should be considered closed, and, as Banc Fluich is part of that production area, it should be considered closed, though the data displayed says its open.
Note: Status only transfers between sites in the same production area, harvesting the same species. A 'Closed' status for mussels will not impact on pacific oysters in the same production area. |
