Consultation on EU risk assessment in the food sector

Wednesday, 24 January 2018

The European Commission have launched a public consultation seeking the views of stakeholders and citizens on EU risk assessment in the food sector.

This initiative follows earlier announcements in relation to the EC REFIT exercise of Regulation 178/2002, the outcomes of which were published last week, and the EC Communication on the European Citizens Initiative on glyphosate that was presented last December.

The Commission’s eight-week public consultation has been organised via an online questionnaire that aims to gather feedback on the following themes:

  • transparency and independence of the EU risk assessment system with respect to the underlying industry studies and information on which EFSA's risk assessment/scientific advice is based.
  • risk communication.
  • the governance of EFSA, in particular the involvement of the EU Member States (MS) in the EU risk assessment system.

The results of the public consultation will be considered by EC DG SANTE in view ofa Commission legislative proposal to be presented to the European Parliament and Council by May 2018.
