FSAI have received further information from RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed), regarding origin and distribution of ruccola (rocket) salad. It has been confirmed that the ruccola (rocket) salad originated from Italy.

The Norwegian Food Control Authority has issued an alert via Eurosurveillance regarding an outbreak of a relatively rare strain of food poisoning bacteria, Salmonella Thompson.

A meeting was held in Brussels on 11 November of the Commission Expert Working Group on Dioxins and PCBs in food (chaired by the Commission’s Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General), where the Dutch, German, Belgian and French delegations provided an update on the current situation on the investigations involving dioxin contamination in animal feed resulting from contaminated Kaolinitic clay.

FSAI has been informed of ongoing checks being carried out in the Netherlands on a potato by-product used in animal feed identified as being contaminated with dioxin.

FSAI has been informed by the Food Standards Agency (Northern Ireland) that testing during the UK surveillance programme for veterinary medicines has found Moy Park Ltd fresh organic free range chicken contaminated with nitrofurans.

Salmonella Newport Outbreak in UK

FSAI is aware of a large outbreak of a relatively rare strain of food poisoning bacteria, Salmonella Newport, which has affected over 350 people in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man, since the end of August. At least 20 of those ill have been admitted to hospital.

Following the issue of alert Notification 2004.11 Update 1, further testing in Ireland of various batches and brands of Palm oil have been identified containing Sudan IV dye, an illegal additive.
