The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) was delighted to present a Special Award to Rían Byrne of Coláiste Cill Mhántáin in Co Wicklow in the Biological and Ecological Junior Individual Category at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition on Friday evening.
It is the first year for the FSAI to provide a special award at the event and it was awarded in recognition of the best project to show potential to protect the health of consumers in the area of food safety. It was selected from a total of 550 projects at the exhibition this year.
Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI, said:
“We are delighted to participate in the BT Young Scientist Awards this year. Rían’s project, entitled “Will Hydroxymethylfurfuraldehyde (HMF) Levels in Honey Affect the Quality of Honey and Effects of the Honey on Human Health?” was extremely impressive and shows a level of innovation which was very deserving of this award. Rían’s attention to detail and hard work is inspiring. It was an excellent, well thought through project that he should be very proud of.”
The FSAI celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
