FSAI Launches New E-Learning Resources for Food Industry

Wednesday, 27 February 2013

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today launched a dedicated food safety training facility on its website www.fsai.ie to provide free online e-learning resources for food businesses. The first of the e-learning resources deals with food additives and flavourings, including the regulatory requirements and controls governing their use.

The food additives module takes 30-45 minutes to complete and is an ideal starting place for staff and owners of food businesses seeking to increase their knowledge of the subject. It covers the terminology and definitions associated with additives, along with an overview of functional classes, labelling requirements and relevant legislation.

The food flavourings module consists of video interviews with FSAI staff covering areas such as the legislation regulating the use of flavourings; labelling requirements for food containing flavourings; and enforcement and industry compliance issues.

The online programmes are designed to be completed by the users in their own time and can be viewed in short sessions, with further information and extra resources available for future reference.  Additional materials are being developed and will be added to the learning resource section of the website once completed.

“It is important for food businesses to ensure they strictly adhere to all regulatory requirements governing the use of additives and flavourings in food,” says Prof. Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI.  “The e-learning resources launched today will enable those involved in food production to keep up-to-date and informed on the regulatory controls and labelling requirements involved for additives and flavourings.  These resources form part of an ongoing programme the FSAI is undertaking to provide free and easily accessible information and learning resources on key topics of interest to the food industry.”
