Message:

Salmonella has been detected in a batch of sesame seeds, supplied via the UK to three retail chains (Supervalu,Superquinn, Tesco Ireland) in the Republic of Ireland. The batches have been withdrawn from sale by the supermarkets but consumers who may have already purchased the seeds should not eat the seeds, and should dispose of them or return them to the supermarket. The type of Salmonella present has not yet been identified and has not been detected in most of the samples taken; but if present could cause illness if the seeds are eaten raw. The implicated products are:

2. Sold by Supervalu:

                  SV Sesame Seeds 150g code: 519813 Best before: 31st Mar 2010

3. Sold by Tesco:
                    Tesco Wholefoods Seed Mix 100 g packs; code: 008480219  BB: 30th Nov 2009

 

Nature Of Danger:

The seeds, if eaten raw, could cause salmonellosis. Symptoms can include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever. There have been no reports of illness from eating these seeds.

Action Required:

Inspectors:

EHOs should carry out spot checks on their local Supervalu, Tesco and Superquinn supermarkets to ensure implicated batches have been withdrawn. Notify FSAI of any breaches found.

Manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, caterers & retailers:

The three retailers have already removed the implicated batches from sale.

Consumers:

Consumers are advised not to eat the seeds but to dispose of them or return them to the supermarket where they were purchased. Consumers who may have already consumed this product and are feeling unwell should seek medical advice.
