Two Enforcement Orders Served in October 2009

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today stated that one Closure Order and one Improvement Order were served on food businesses during the month of October for breaches of food safety legislation pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998. The Closure Order was served by environmental health officers (EHOs) in the HSE Dublin North East Region on Yue Lai Xiang restaurant, 100A Parnell Street, Dublin 1. An Improvement Order was served by EHOs in the HSE Dublin Mid Leinster Region on Fruit 4 U greengrocer, Melitta Road, Kildare.
Also during the month of October, the HSE South Region successfully prosecuted the operator of Golden Dragon Chinese & Thai Restaurant, Market Quay, Bandon, Cork.
Commenting on these latest Enforcement Orders, Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI, stated that food businesses must have an adequate food safety management system in place so that they can assure consumers that the food they are eating has been handled and cooked to the highest standard.
“Most food businesses are committed to high standards for the health of their customers and the good of their business. However, we urge food businesses to make sure that there is a food safety management system in place and that it is consulted on a regular basis and updated where necessary. The onus is on each individual food business to ensure that all staff handling and preparing food are up to date on best safety and hygiene practices. It is a legal requirement that all staff handling food are supervised and/or trained in food hygiene commensurate with their responsibilities,” he stated.
Details of the food businesses served with these Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website. Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
