Four Enforcement Orders Served in May 2010

Tuesday, 8 June 2010

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today stated that three Closure Orders and one Prohibition Order were served on food businesses during the month of May, for breaches of food safety legislation pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998.  The Orders were issued by environmental health officers (EHOs) in the HSE West Region and the HSE Dublin Mid Leinster Region.

Closure Orders were served on:

• Lir Cafe Bar, Market Square, Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon*
• Make Cents supermarket’s hot and cold deli counters and associated cooking/preparation facilities, Gurteen Cross, Gurteen, Sligo
• Unit 5D Station Road Business Park (bakery), Clondalkin Industrial Estate, Clondalkin, Dublin 22

A Prohibition Order was served on:

• Polonez supermarket, Harmony Hill, Co. Sligo

Also, during the month of May, a successful prosecution was carried out by the HSE Dublin North East on The Green Chilli restaurant, 46 Manor Street, Dublin 7.

Professor Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI stated today that it continued to be a disappointment that every month it reports numerous food businesses in breach of food safety legislation.  It is unfair to those food businesses with excellent food safety and hygiene practices that a small number of premises do not comply with the law and ultimately, potentially, put the public’s health at risk.

“We would stress to food businesses the importance of maintaining the highest standards of food safety hygiene practices at all times and more especially in warmer weather, when food bugs can multiple more rapidly.  We encourage food businesses to visit our website, as it is a comprehensive source of information on every aspect of food safety, food hygiene management, food safety training and food legislation.  Our advice line 1890 336677 and our recently launched Facebook page are additional resources, so there is no excuse for food businesses to be unaware of their legal responsibilities to protect consumer health in relation to food safety.”

Details of the food businesses served with these Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website.  Closure Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
