Food Labelling – EU Targeted Surveys on the Revision of Rules on Information Provided to Consumers

Tuesday, 01 March 2022

The European Commission recently published a number of targeted surveys as part of the overall consultation process* to gather feedback on the revision of the regulation on food information i.e Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 (FIC).

In addition to a survey of national competent authorities, a number of other targeted surveys have been launched aimed at:

  • Businesses and business associations in the food and beverage sector
  • Small and medium sized enterprises in the EU’s food and beverage sector
  • Consumer, health and environmental organisations engaged with issues relevant for the EU’s food and beverage sector

These targeted surveys will also support the EU Public Consultation which closes on 7 March 2022.
The various food labelling topics under consideration are as follows:

  • Front-of-pack nutrition labelling and nutrient profiling criteria to restrict claims: a proposal for EU harmonised and mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling and for the setting of ‘nutrient profiling’ criteria, which are thresholds of nutrients above or below which nutrition and health claims on foods are restricted.
  • Origin labelling: An extension of mandatory origin indications to certain products.
  • Date marking: A revision of the EU rules on date marking (‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates).
  • Alcohol labelling: Revoke current exemptions in EU rules requiring a mandatory indication of a list of ingredients and a nutrition declaration for alcoholic beverages.

Access to the targeted surveys, background information and details of how to receive a personalised survey link (which can be saved and edited) is available on the European Commission website.

The targeted surveys will remain open until Friday 11 March 2022.
