Best Practice for Infant Feeding in Ireland - A Guide for Healthcare Professionals

The Department of Health currently recommends that infants are exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. Without question, breastfeeding should – first and foremost – continue to be protected and promoted in the interests of both maternal and infant health. However, with less than half of Irish mothers choosing to breastfeed on discharge from hospital, guidance on safe formula milk feeding must be provided to parents/carers who choose not to breastfeed.
