DAFM has operated a formal Clean Livestock Policy (CLP), focusing on bovines going to slaughter, since 1998.This policy is underpinned by EU and national regulatory requirements.

From 20th July 2016, Directive 2009/39/EC on foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses (PARNUTS) has been repealed and replaced by Regulation (EU) No 609/2013 (commonly referred to as the food for specific groups regulation or FSGs).

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has carried out a risk assessment in relation to this incident. This detailed assessment concludes that this incident related to one cow, poses no risk to public health. The identification of this incident by DAFM (Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine) and the subsequent traceability actions demonstrate the effectiveness of the food safety regulatory system.
