Advice on Danone infant formula and follow-on formula recall

What you need to know

On 6 February 2026, Danone updated its recent product recall in Ireland to include specific batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant formula and follow-on formula due to the potential presence of cereulide. The recall has been expanded following the European Food Safety Authority’s publication on 2 January 2026, of a recommended acute reference dose for cereulide in infant formula. The FSAI is advising parents, guardians and caregivers who may have the recalled products at home not to feed them to their infant or young child.

What products are affected?

See the products affected in the food alert. To see if a specific product is included, check the product name, batch number, expiry date and any other details listed against the affected product. See the other recent Danone alert relating to this recall.

Can I return the product or get a refund?

Danone is advising customers to contact its Aptamil careline team on 1800 22 1234 (www.aptaclub.ie), or its Cow & Gate careline on 1800 570 570 (www.cgbabyclub.ie) if they have any queries regarding this recall.

What is cereulide?

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning. The toxin may be pre-formed in a food and is extremely heat resistant.

What if an infant or young child has consumed the product?

Do not feed any more of the implicated product to the infant or young child. Consumption of foods containing cereulide toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting. Symptoms can appear within five hours. The duration of illness is usually 6 to 24 hours.

If no symptoms are displayed, there’s nothing further you need to do.

If you are concerned about the health of an infant or young child, contact a healthcare professional.

Have there been any reports of illness associated with the consumption of the products concerned?

To date, there have been no confirmed cases associated with consumption of the products concerned.

Are other Danone infant formula and follow-on formula products affected?

While the infant formula and follow-on formula included in this wider recall are exported, we are aware that some product exported to the UK subsequently may have indirectly been distributed to Ireland from the UK, for example through websites, and the FSAI is providing the details of the UK recall in order that consumers have the information to check if they have the implicated products. A list of these UK affected products is available in the food alert.

What steps is the FSAI taking to protect consumers?

The FSAI and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine who regulate the Danone manufacturing facilities in Ireland, continue to engage with Danone to ensure that all food safety measures are being taken to protect consumers.

The FSAI and the National Environmental Health Service is verifying these recalls through inspections.

About the recall

On 23 January 2026, Danone initiated a recall of specific batches of its infant formula and follow-on formula due to the potential presence of cereulide. At the time, the FSAI was notified by Danone that none of the implicated products had been distributed to Ireland. The implicated products were manufactured in Ireland and exported to a number of EU countries, the UK and third countries. The FSAI notified the European Commission of this recall through its Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) to ensure that all affected countries are notified.

On 26 January 2026, on foot of the recall initiated by Danone, Boots notified the FSAI that  individual packs of Aptamil 1 From Birth First infant milk from a specific batch which was subject to a recall by Danone on 23 January due to the presence of cereulide, were sold via the Boots.ie website for online sales. The implicated products were manufactured in Ireland by Danone and exported to a number of EU countries, the UK and third countries. However, due to indirect distribution to Ireland from the UK, the implicated packs were sold in Ireland via the Boots.ie website for online sales.

Danone also undertook a wider recall of infant formula and follow-on formula, and base powder manufactured in Ireland for export to a number of EU countries, the UK and third countries.

The Danone recall is associated with a contaminated raw ingredient which was also implicated in the recent recall of some batches of infant formula and follow-on formula by Nestlé. An ingredient, ARA oil, which was manufactured in China, was contaminated with cereulide and added as an ingredient in base powder used to make infant formula and follow-on formula.

The FSAI and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine who regulate the Danone manufacturing facilities in Ireland, continue to engage with Danone to ensure that all food safety measures are being taken to protect consumers.
