Monitoring the Presence of GM Ingredients on the Irish Market, 2016
Authorised GM food ingredients are allowed on the EU market. If the GM proportion exceeds 0.9 % of the total ingredient in a food it must be labelled accordingly. Food samples collected by the Environmental Health Services of the HSE are analysed by the Public Analyst’s Laboratory in Cork for the presence of GM ingredients. GM ingredients present at trace levels are presumed to be adventitious and therefore in compliance with the legislation. Out of the 41 food samples analysed in 2016, 40 were in compliance with EU GM Food & Feed legislation.
