Council Directive 2001/111/EC (OJ L 10, p53, 12.01.02) of 20 December 2001 relating to certain sugars for human consumption.
Commission Directive 98/28/EC (OJ L 140, p10, 12.05.98) of 29 April 1998 granting derogation from certain provisions of Directive 93/43/EEC on the hygiene of foodstuffs as regards the transport by sea of bulk raw sugar.

- European Communities (Marketing of Sugar Products) Regulations, 2003 (S.I. No. 289 of 2003)
The purpose of these Irish Regulations is to give effect to Directive 2001/111/EC. The Directive defines several kinds of sugar and sets down rules for their labelling and packing.
The following sugars are defined:
- semi-white sugar
- sugar or white sugar
- extra white sugar
- sugar solution
- invert sugar solution
- invert sugar syrup
- glucose syrup
- dried glucose syrup
- dextrose monohydrate
- dextrose anhydrous.
- fructose
Sugar products which were manufactured before 12 July 2004 in accordance with the previous legislation (now revoked and listed in Regulation 10 of the S.I.) may be placed on the market until stocks run out.
