Guidance on the Management of Norovirus in Oysters

This information aims to assist shellfish producers to reduce the risk of norovirus contaminated oysters being placed on the market and to reduce the risk of outbreaks of illness associated with the consumption of norovirus contaminated oysters.

This guidance is advisory only. Adoption is recommended but it is not a requirement on any shellfish producer or FBO.

The document describes the food safety risk presented by Norovirus in live bivalve molluscs and the general requirements of food law applying to this issue.

Potential management measures are described. These management measures are advisory but shellfish gatherers are encouraged to consider them in the context of their own operations and local circumstances. Links to further information are provided.
